My mind wandered; Waves lapping the polished cobbles, wind in the trees, the smell of a campfire, the taste of fresh caught trout……..i got the idea that a canoe would be a good thing to have. Like many of our crazy ideas, it started with me getting some inkling of a thought that would develop into something much greater and much more than an idea but reality.
So my initial idea was to trade our old beat up BMW straight for a nice canoe. Something like a Grand Laker. The idea eventually faded when I began to realize a nice canoe could be acquired for about $300 and the car could sell for $1000. That and the couple offers ranging from junk canoes to handguns was just too much. So the car sold and with cash in hand we began our quest to find the perfect adventure craft.
Around the area we wandered, through the classifieds we leafed and eventually we found a guy who dealed in them as a hobby. A quick change of cash and we had a 16′ Old Town canoe complete with paddles and life jackets. Of course we could not wait until we got home, first thing we did was find the nearest lake to try it out. It was perfect!!!
Every weekend since we obtained the canoe we have taken it out and enjoyed it. We have seen loons nesting, large bass lurking under the surface, and even got to listen to a fiddle and guitar duet coming from a summer camp as we paddled across a quiet lake. Life is good in a canoe. 🙂
Next year adventures are forthcoming, multiday camping is in the cards as are a few river trips. I am sure the dogs will not mind!!! Till then……
